28 Cum Laude Students Lead 2017 UP College of Medicine Graduation

Twenty eight cum laude students with a General Weighted Average of at least 1.75 led the graduates at SIMBUYO: The UP College of Medicine 108th Commencement Exercises and Philippine General Hospital Internship Program Closing Ceremonies, held last July 29, 2017 at the University Theater in UP Diliman.

Dr. Christian Wilson Rosales Turalde took top honors as class valedictorian and Most Outstanding Medical Graduate. Dr. Aldric Cristoval Chua Reyes followed as class salutatorian. Dr. Patricia Maria Gregoria Villegas Mina was the third ranked graduate.

The following students rounded out the top ten: 4th place Dr. Alinda Mae Chan Gordola, 5th place Dr. Aila Marnelle Apolinario Cruz, 6th place Dr. Julian Alejandro Santos, 7th Place Dr. Kevin Michael Cachapero Moalong, 8th place Dr. Bernadeth Lyn Cal Piamonte, 9th place Dr. Karen Joyce Soloria Velasco, and 10th place Dr. Marie Gene Diaz Cruz.

Other cum laude graduates included Dr. John Jefferson Vera Besa, Dr. Jan Michael Sibayan Carigaba, Dr. Jalea Losa Coralde, Dr. Jana Laine Teniozo Cortez, Dr. Louie Arielle Arboleda Dado-Severino, Dr. Roger Remo Ilagan Dandoy, Dr. Kristine Joy Murillo Iraola, Dr. Ithran Issachar Go Kho, Dr. Henry Yalung Medina, Jr., Dr. Karl Jeffrey Eleng Murillo, Dr. Denisa Balena Oraya, Dr. John Christopher Agsalud Pilapil, Dr. Carissa Margosha Yu Rodis, Dr. Sebastian Maria Bernardo Sagadal, Dr. Joanne Paula Cartujano See, Dr. Andrew Rufino Martin Villafuerte, Dr. Eljohn Chua Yee, and Dr. Aveline Marie Du Ylanan.

Ten MD-PhD students of UPCM received their certificate of internship from the Philippine General Hospital, and will graduate with the degree of Doctor of Medicine - Doctor of Philosophy in Molecular Medicine in 2019 upon completion of their research dissertation: Mark Joseph Mendoza Abaca, Cecile Chan Dungog, Natasha Andrea Fernandez, Francis James Anonuevo Gordovez, Rommel Raras Oliveras, Joy Vanessa Dulay Perez, John Carlo Bernal Reyes, Raniv Dawey Rojo, Florence Giannina Fong San Juan, and Annavi Marie Gabriel Villanueva.

Michael Russelle Silos Alvarez, Dr. Rowena Natividad Flores-Genuino, and Dr. Crist John Mejia Pastor also received their Master of Science in Biochemistry, Master of Science in Epidemiology (Clinical Epidemiology), and Doctor of Philosophy in Biochemistry respectively.

The Most Outstanding Intern and Dr. Augusto A. Camara Awardee for Academic Excellence in Medicine is Dr. Joshua G. Gaetos, the president of the post-graduate interns. The following students rounded out the top ten Outstanding Interns: 2nd place Dr. John Christopher A. Pilapi, 3rd place Dr. Jan David C. Monzon, 4th place Dr. Karl Philip L. Avillo, 5th place Dr. Kevin Michael C. Moalong, 6th place Dr. Mark Joseph M. Abaca, 7th place Dr. Mateo C. Te, III, 8th place Dr. Sherry Mae C. Mondido, 9th Dr. Patricia Ann D. Uy, and 10th place Dr. Mikaela Arlou N. Soller.

There were two faculty awardees. Dr. Blesile Suzette S. Mantaring of the Department of Anatomy took the UPMASA Missouri-Southern Illinois Chapter Outstanding Medical Teacher in the Basic Sciences Award, while Dr. Anthony Geronimo H. Cordero of the Department of Family and Community Medicine received the corresponding award for the Clinical Sciences.

Other student awardees were Dr. Vincent S. Balilla receiving the Sir Hugh Greenwood Outstanding in Community Service Award, Dr. Ahmad S. Musahari receiving the Oreta-Dizon-Santos-Ocampo Research Award, Dr. John Jefferson V. Besa receiving the UPMAS Leadership Award, and Dr. Noel L. Bernardo receiving the Eusebio S. Garcia-Class ’36 Leadership Award.

In closing the program, Dean Mejia led the graduates in swearing the Oath of Hippocrates. For the challenge of loyalty and service to the Filipino people, Dr. Jairus B. Cabajar accepted it on behalf of his classmates. Class 2017 was then joined by UP Medchoir in singing their Tao Rin Pala-winning piece “Sa Labas ng Mga Arko”, followed by the PGH Hymn, Awit ng Kolehiyo, and finally UP Naming Mahal.
